120 second Small Business Tips: Online Invoicing

Freshbook helps you bring home the bacon

From the day we started our company, AJ and I wanted to be able to run our company from the road.  We wanted to be able to to work from the United Kingdom, Kenya, Germany, France, Tanzania, Miami, New York, Montreal and wherever else our little adventurous hearts wanted to go.  So we intenionally setup our comapny to run from the cloud.

One of the services we use for invoicing is Freshbooks.  Freshbooks allows you to create custom invoices and that you can email or mail to clients.  There are a ton of features that make Freshbooks one of my personal my favorites app (since I am the one who gets to deal with invoicing, yay).  The paypal and google checkout integreation allows your clients to pay directly from the invoice to your paypal or google checkout.  The other really neat feature is the invoice autobiography, on the bottom of every invoice in your dashboard you can see when the invoice was created, edited, sent viewed and eventually paid.

Full Disclosure - Freshbooks is one of the awesome sponsors of our Rise of the Cubicle Farmer tour, and we have been using them since the day we opened our company.  If you run a small business, you should really consider using them.

Recap – Day 17 in Pictures

Today we are driving to Portland from San Francisco … yeah for 11 hours of driving! We just got our second oil change. We desperately need to get our alignment fixed, but the shop closed before we could get in, so hopefully we don’t have any late night issues tonight. We are workshifting once again from a Starbucks in Redding and will probably put in another 3 hours of driving tonight. If you are in the Portland or Seattle area let us know and we will try to stop by.

Interview with Aaron Levie

Box.net Everywhere
Yesterday we meet with Aaron Levie the Co-Founder of Box.net.  He started Box with Dylan Smith a few years ago and have just moved into an uber creative, new office and have over 100 employees that belong to the Box.net family.  Aaron offered a unique perspective on starting a business and talks about the importance of getting your ideas out to market and the role of actively listening to your customers and iterating your product or service based on their response.

Below is the interview from youtube.

Are You Looking for Office Space

During my research for cool coworking spaces around the USA I stumbled upon Open Office Space and really fell in love with their service.  They allow you to search for office space (desk or office).  The most valuable thing about Open Office Space is it allows you to filter your search by location, price, amenities, property type and number of people you need to accommodate.  Open Office Space is so cool that they have even come along side us as a sponsor.  As we continue on our journey looking for more work spaces to visit I will continue to use open office space and let you know if I find any more cool features.

Here’s a short little video review on youtube.

Interview with Pasta Bar Co-preneurs

DSC05570

We had the pleasure of spending a few days in Azusa, CA and spent a lot of time at the Pasta Bar.  Geni and Mirko, a passionate husband and wife team started the Pasta Bar in February with no marketing budget and in their first two days welcomed over 1,000 customers and have yet to be in the red.

I was very curious how this could be the case, espeically in an economic downturn, for such a young business to experience so much success.  Then I walked through the doors and saw why – you are greeted by Mirko or Geni with a warm smile, they explain the menu and help you choose what to eat, insist that you sit while your food is being made and bring it to you pipping hot.  In addition to having great home cooked food at a reasonable price, they have taken advantage of new media and the ability to extend relationships with customers beyond the four walls of the restaurant.  The Pasta Bar has over 1k fans on facebook and 600 followers on twitter.  They have a foursquare special and a new blog that gives an inside peak into what goes on at the Pasta Bar everyday.

Geni and Mirko both believe that if you are passionate about something you have to take the chance and go for it – start small, start part time, but just start! If its something you love to do, start right away.

The interview is 15 minutes from youtube, I suggest you watch every minute of it, the passion these two exude is contagious.
