Interview with Pasta Bar Co-preneurs

DSC05570

We had the pleasure of spending a few days in Azusa, CA and spent a lot of time at the Pasta Bar.  Geni and Mirko, a passionate husband and wife team started the Pasta Bar in February with no marketing budget and in their first two days welcomed over 1,000 customers and have yet to be in the red.

I was very curious how this could be the case, espeically in an economic downturn, for such a young business to experience so much success.  Then I walked through the doors and saw why – you are greeted by Mirko or Geni with a warm smile, they explain the menu and help you choose what to eat, insist that you sit while your food is being made and bring it to you pipping hot.  In addition to having great home cooked food at a reasonable price, they have taken advantage of new media and the ability to extend relationships with customers beyond the four walls of the restaurant.  The Pasta Bar has over 1k fans on facebook and 600 followers on twitter.  They have a foursquare special and a new blog that gives an inside peak into what goes on at the Pasta Bar everyday.

Geni and Mirko both believe that if you are passionate about something you have to take the chance and go for it – start small, start part time, but just start! If its something you love to do, start right away.

The interview is 15 minutes from youtube, I suggest you watch every minute of it, the passion these two exude is contagious.

Interview with Lisa Horner

AJ interviewed Lisa Horner of GoTo Meeting and talked about distributed workforces and workshifting as part of how you can empower employees within the enterprise.

Something that really stood out to me was the idea that when getting work done as a team it is imperative not to be location and space centric instead build a culture of trust.  Regardless of where people are you need to believe that you can build an intimate relationship with them.

Interview with Pam Slim

Pam Slim & Family

Early on our trip we stopped off in Mesa, Arizona to talk with Pam Slim, author of Escape from Cubicle Nation about the changing landscape of work.  Pam is incredibly insightful and offers practical tips for people embarking on the entrepreneurial journey and speaks about the loathing scale, your 2 year old self and how hating your job intensely is not a business plan.

Interview with Gangplank

Smack in the middle of downtown Chandler is a wonderful work space that brings creativity, innovation and collaboration to the area.  Gangplank HQ is not the traditional coworking center, they pride themselves on being a collaborative space. Anyone can work out of Gangplank and on any given day there are around 50 people that do.  The cost of entry to the space is free.  As Katie explained, “the people of Gangplank trade in social capital not monetary capital”.  Their idea is that by keeping things free where no money exchanges hands real innovation can happen because everyone is on equal footing.
